Seriously Tango!

>> Wednesday, September 9, 2009

I had to have a heart to heart with Tango yesterday. I've told you before, Tango thinks he's a dog. Really. Tango's as sweet as they come but because of his size...actually the size of his massive head...he can get downright pushy.

And because I got Tango when he was a baby he knows all the tricks of the trade. I can't help myself. I always have treats in my pocket and Tango knows it! I love to give him a peppermint after a good hard ride. I love to give him a sugar cube when he runs to me when I call him from the field. Who wouldn't want to reward a boy that's so obedient?

Well, my husband for one! I'm not too great with the camera yet, but as you can see, Tango has his head twisted around Chuck's body trying to get into his pocket. Chuck likes Tango well enough, but he's a little intimidated by his size. Who wouldn't be if they're not a horse person?

I decided go have another talk with Tango. Spider thought he join us for the conversation. He's much older and wiser than Tango. Since this picture was taken from a distance (Chuck was as far away as he could get) it's hard to see, but the reason my black vest is at an angle is because Tango pushed it up to get into my pocket again. That boy! Maybe Spider will try to talk some sense into Tango when I'm gone.

Maybe not.
MY BOY LOVES TO EAT!
I still think grass is a vegetable, but that's another subject!

My in-laws had a horse that thought he was a dog. He'd hop on their porch and eat their dog food. He broke more than one board doing that. How he didn't break his leg is a mystery.

They started feeding the dogs inside and that helped. Until he found their bag of bird seed. He ate all 25 pounds of it! We had to walk him all day to keep him from getting bloat.

He lived to a ripe old age until lung issues caused them to have to put him down. Guess living on the edge was what sustained him all those years.

Tango is very pretty. No wonder you cannot resist!

P.S. I just read your blog on Kelly. How touching, and of course after having just lost two life long pets, my heart goes out to you.
Very touching story.

Hi Jan, it's lovely to meet you. Thanks so much for popping by my blog. I'm so excited to see your blog, I LOVE horses. I grew up riding and was lucky to have my own horses a few years back, I just adored them and their characters. My last horse, a Welsh Cob gorgeous boy loved looking for mints in my pockets too :) Your dogs are so sweet too. I'm looking forward to seeing your books. Catherine x

Tanog and his treats - love it! : ))) Spider too.

My horse loves treats, too, and probably gets too many of them. He'll mouth all of my pockets to try to find where I'm hiding the goodies.

I don't blame you one bit! Who could ever say "no" to a face & personality as great as Tango's?? What a privilege to have gotten him as a baby & be able to help shape his personality as he has grown! I'm sure there are times when you'll admit to that more readily than others, though!!
Do you show much? We used to come down to Delaware Co. fairgrounds (right next to the Big Brown Jug track) for MODA recognized show ever year... How I miss those days!! Reading your post always makes me long for the sweet smell of horses!!

My Nekoda is a nosy one. I don't carry the treats in my pocket, but if I'm out there doing anything and feel a little warm air... Guess who?

Sandy September 9, 2009 at 9:29 PM

LOL...love the pictures. Yes, Tango does indeed think he's a dog. Like Chuck, really far more than Chuck I was intimated. I am around many animals. Many truly frighten me.

You're getting really good at getting your photo's in your blogs, and have learned so much since the beginning. Kudos.

Hi Jan
Oh your blog smells so sweet like fresh cut hay and the smell of horses! Yes Tango is a mighty big puppy dog. They forget they are big. Tango thinks he is just the size of you!
If I was Tango, I would be running to get those treats too! He is a smart boy, and so
BEAUTIFUL.
Your photos are terrific. What a great little story. We feel like we are right there.
And yes, I bet Spider will be telling Tango a few little tips on being a sweeter to get more and more treats.
Treats make life sweeter- (from a pugs point of view)
Thank you for taking us with you on this day at the barn,
love

Hi Tango's momma,
Sure like your site. Funny, I like words, poems, and writing too!
One of my favorite poems is here: http://themosquitoesbuzz.blogspot.com/2008/09/equus-caballus.html
...along with pics of our horses.

Thank you for sharing those wonderful pictures. My old pony Monty thought he was a dog too! He'd do the usual - come when he was called, follow you around, do tricks for treats, but he also would go jogging with me on his days off from being ridden. I'd run through the trails in the woods, and he'd be right at my side like a dog running with their master. Horses are so great. :)

Jan Mader September 10, 2009 at 3:32 PM

Yes they are!

Sman September 10, 2009 at 8:52 PM

Sometimes my fish Puck thinks he is a dog too. I appreciate it though because he is as close as it comes in a dorm room! When I call him from above, he will swim to the top, and follow me as I circle the bowl... and NOT just when he thinks he is getting food. Sometimes he just likes to say hi! He puts on a show for me too when he is feeling flashy! Right now he is a bit moody, and I don't blame him. He is feeling a little deceived since I called him to the top only to swoop him in the fish net, so I could clean the bowl. He was pouting in his house earlier, but I think he has gotten over it since he is again swimming around like the social fish he is!

Jan Mader September 10, 2009 at 9:59 PM

Oh little Sman....you surely make me smile. Please give Puck a kiss from his favorite aunt!

Can't wait to see that flashy little imp!

TC September 10, 2009 at 10:50 PM

Tango looks like he might be a trifle bit spoiled like a white fluffy dog I know? Now would you spoil your horse? ;-)

ocmist September 12, 2009 at 4:33 AM

My Peruvian, Cory, thinks he is a dog, too! He has a really silly grin that he does to beg for whatever treats he knows I've got with me, and when I was in bed after a surgery, he'd put his head in the window to say hi!

He also tried to get into my lap when we took him to the beach and a wave came up and splashed him in the face... NOT a good idea!

Your Tango is so beautiful and has almost the same markings on the one side as my first horse, Ladybug, did. She was a buckskin pinto. Wish we had grass in our pasture like you do. It makes it so nice for the horses.

Sorry, I'm behind again. Have you visited and seen the puppy pictures yet? Linda

Jan Mader September 12, 2009 at 10:06 AM
